Who makes the best fish and chips in Brisbane?

One of life’s simplest pleasures is enjoying a serve of freshly cooked, mouth-watering, fish and chips.

Do you like yours old school – wrapped in paper – or do you prefer it served up on an over-sized plate with aioli and a delicate garnish?

Every Brisbanite who loves seafood has a favourite fish and chip shop. It doesn’t matter where you are in Brisbane, the fish and seafood should be fresh – there’s no excuse, given the proximity of Moreton Bay.

So who makes Brisbane’s best fish and chips? Is it one of those perennial favourites on the bay (and does having a view of the water influence diner perception), or is it one of the funky new breed of outlets offering delicious and innovative new ways to serve fish?

Or maybe you’ve had a delicious serve of fish and chips at a more conventional restaurant. A good fish and chip menu can often be found in the most unlikely places.

Right then. Over to you, seafood lovers. Let us know what you think in the comments below.

  1. Grilled Fish at Clayfield is amazing. Chips are great crisp and then fluffy inside with fish to die for cooked to perfection every time. Staff always friendly and great value for money. Not stingy on chips. I would go nowhere else., they never disappoint.

  2. Best quality and price is Gone Fishing at the Myer Centre CBD. The Cod is to die for. Chips in Canola Oil are best in Brisbane.

  3. Riverside Fish & Chips, Graceville Ave, Graceville. Fish and Chips plus restaurant quality meals. Best Fish & Chippery you can find in Brisbane. Quality, freshness, presentation, all excellent and service is always with a smile. Eat in or take away. And they won’t empty your wallet!

  4. World’s Best Fish & Chip Shop is in Aus: Doyles at Watsons’ Bay on Sydney Harbor — and well worth the drive!

But if you’re in a hurry? Can’t beat Doug’s at 60 Flinders Parade, Sandgate 4017! Yum.

  5. George’s in west end. Friendly, quality fresh fish which you can have cooked to your liking in front of you as you wait. Hand cut chips too – miss that place

  6. What no votes for Fishmongers Wife?! I still can’t find a excellent place on the Northside, but maria’s at aspley is doing ok at the moment.

  7. The best fish and chips in Brisbane is at The Fishery in Baroona Road Milton. The quality is outstanding and specials are reasonably priced. His mussels and clams are a bit pricey compared to Woolies but his range of seafood is just superb. A salt and battery at St Lucia is also excellent quality if you like the laminex wind blown hot summer sardine style dining experience. I’d leave it to the students and go to The Fishery instead in Milton

  8. Georges in west end.. you chose the fresh fish you want from the counter in front of you and then for an extra dollar they cook it to your liking.. i always get the grilled swordfish… YUMMM.

  9. Best Fish and Chips has to be Sea Change at Cannon Hill. Great price, always fresh and friendly staff. Cannot be beat!

  10. Swampdog Fish and Chips south Brisbane. Hands down… Sustainable and hEalth aware fish and chips! @swampdogfandc

  11. A Salt and Battery on Hawken Drive, St Lucia. Great value, great taste, great choice and great service for locals, students and travelling visitors. I’d reccommend it everytime!! They also sell yummy Boylans american soda pop that you cant buy in many other places!

  12. Marine world seafood cafe has great seafood. The best thing about this place is huge seafood display where you can select your fish and have them cook it up. They also do gluten free crumb, batter and grilled fish.

  13. For that old school paper wrapped fish & chips I don’t think you can do better than Tipplers seafood in Taringa! Fish is so fresh and Its really well priced too!

  14. I’ll agree with DM fish in Calamvale, it’s near my parents and we’ve eaten it so many gosh-darn times. But I’ll disagree with A Salt and Battery, they are so overrated.

But for me, Graceville seafoods on Oxley Road. That place is amazing. I go out of my way to get food from there all the time

  15. Fish Bar at Kangaroo Point has the most delicious chips I have ever tried! and fish is always fresh, love it !

  16. DM fish in Calamvale. It is traditional old English fashion fish and chips. It is just simply delicious fish and chips

  17. A Salt and Battery @ St Lucia. Best fish and chips I’ve ever had – in a whole league of their own. Worth any amount of driving regardless of how far away you live.

  18. Little Mermaid in Alexandra Hills! Not generally for the food – but the boys who work there are smokin! (Ask for Lucas or Jason, you won’t be dissappointed ;) )

  19. 2nd that motion for Carraway Pier at Kelvin Grove, truly great fish and chips, and that’s from a Londoner!
